Without question, the Whistler Village Beer Festival is my favourite fest of the year. It’s a fantastic way to wind down the summer and beer festival season in one of the most beautiful places! Nothing beats drinking beer with mountains as your backdrop.
This is the fourth year of the event and it’s definitely one of the key beer festivals in BC. The festival began as a collaborative concept between Tourism Whistler, Gibbons Group & Watermark. Initially, there had been talks about introducing a beer festival to the resort and to either introduce it as part of Cornucopia Wine & Food Festival or make it stand alone. The consensus was to create a new weekend in the slower season.
The five day festival is packed full of craft beer events. The events at the start of the fest include a BBQ and Brewery tour, cask competition and blind IPA tasting competition! Keep it tuned to their website for any more events to be announced
For the foodie fans, there were many beer and food pairing events. Some of the top-billed events include Barley and The Beast, a 5 course meal put together by the executive chefs at The Westin’s Grill & Vine Restaurant. There’s also an all-you-can-eat sirloin steak evening, complete with souvenir apron! Of course, we can’t forget the multiple smaller events happening at locations all through the fest! This year has a big focus on live music this year, so you’ll be able to find something for everyone!
Then there’s the main event. Nearly 4000 people will pack the Olympic Plaza and enjoy beers from over 60 different breweries. Having been there for the last two years (one being sunny and gorgeous, and one being a soaking wet weekend) the fest is fun rain or shine! As long as you’ve got the right clothing and a great attitude, you’re guaranteed to have a great time.
The benefit for the breweries in attendance was a chance to win a year long draught contract in the village. What better way to showcase your brews to a worldwide tourism hotspot!
The fest has event partnered with Pacific Coach Lines for some discounted transportation to get you safely from downtown Vancouver or Vancouver International Airport to Whistler Village for all of the WVBF action taking place September 14-18.
Use promo code wvbf2016 to save 15% off from Downtown Vancouver to Whistler and back, and 25% off from YVR to Whistler and back. How cool is that?
Keep your eyes on their Facebook page for lots of announcements about bands, breweries and events! Don’t forget to buy your tickets today! A little birdy told me that CAMRA members even get a discount. I hope I’ll see you in Whistler Sept 14-18!
